Introduction/History

The National Housing Authority (NHA) was established on August 13, 1987 under a resolution with the primary objective of preparing short and long terms plans/programmes and policy guidelines and mobilizing financing resources for development of housing for low income groups. It was subsequently declared as an attached department of Ministry of Housing and Works vide Cabinet Division Notification No.7/2000-Mn-I dated 8th June, 2000.

Mission

• To facilitate, mobilize and utilize resources to formulate an attractive housing policy and ensure its successful and timely implementation.


• Attract local and foreign investment in housing sector.


• Discover new ways to upgrade the existing sub-standard houses and provide affordable housing to low income groups of population in order to improve the overall quality of life in Pakistan.

Functions

• Secretariat to Housing Advisory Board
• Maintain Data Base on Housing Sector
• National housing policy review and formulation of New Policies based on ground realities.
• Policy guidelines for Provincial Housing Authorities (PHAs)
• Monitoring the implementation of the National Housing Policy with particular reference to the Action Plan.
• Regular liaison with the provinces, federal agencies and other stakeholders to determine the level of implementation and bottlenecks, if any.
• Liaison with Housing Finance Institutions and Building Research Institutions regarding the implementation of Policy measures relating to them.
• Dealing with all matters of Islamabad New City Project initiated on public private partnership.
• Technical assistance to housing authorities.
• Development of low cost housing (LCH).
• Monitoring and evaluation of LCH programs.
• Up gradation of KATCHI ABADIES & slums.
